What is iron ochre?
Iron ochre is the product of a natural biochemical reaction. Groundwater in parts of Quebec carries dissolved iron. When that water meets oxygen — inside a foundation drain (weeping tile), a sump pit, or a well — naturally occurring iron bacteria feed on the iron and produce a dense, gelatinous ferric sludge. It is not rust flaking off your pipes, and it is not a product defect: it is soil chemistry. The phenomenon concentrates in areas with sandy, iron-rich soil and a high or fluctuating water table — former marshland north of Montreal, parts of the Outaouais, and pockets across the St. Lawrence lowlands. Is iron ochre harmful?
To people, no — iron bacteria are not considered pathogenic, and touching the deposit is not dangerous (wash your hands; it stains). The real risks are indirect. The sludge progressively clogs foundation drains, and a clogged drain means basement humidity, sump pumps running constantly, and eventually water infiltration and mold — which are health concerns. In wells, iron bacteria are classed as a nuisance (taste, odor, staining) rather than a health hazard, though regular water testing remains wise.

The sump pit is where most homeowners meet iron ochre, because it is the one visible point of the drainage system. If the walls of the pit and the pump itself wear an orange gel coating, assume the same deposit lines the weeping tile all around your foundation. Cleaning the pit — scooping the sludge, rinsing the pump and float — is worthwhile maintenance you can do yourself a few times a year, but it treats the symptom. The drain is where the problem lives.
How iron ochre removal actually works
There is no permanent cure — management is the honest goal. What works is high-pressure water jetting of the foundation drain through cleaning access chimneys (vertical risers added at the corners of the house), on a recurring schedule matched to how fast your deposit rebuilds. Contractors disagree on frequency — every year in severe zones, every two to three years elsewhere — so a camera inspection before and after is the only way to calibrate honestly. What does not work: pouring bleach down the pit (it kills surface bacteria for days, reaches almost none of the drain, and corrodes your pump), and one-shot "miracle" treatments sold as permanent fixes. In severe cases the durable answer is replacing the drain with an ochre-adapted design: rigid smooth-wall pipe, larger diameter, and permanent cleaning access.

Iron ochre is manageable, and a documented, well-maintained system is a very different proposition from a neglected one.
